Podcasting has grown steadily over the past decade as more Americans turn to the spoken word. In the second quarter of 2022, 29 percent of 13-34 year olds listened to a podcast Daily.

WTBUBU’s award-winning student-run radio station, produces over a dozen affiliated students podcast, with new ones being added every semester. The radio station is run by a board of approx 20 students and was overseen by the WTBU faculty advisor Anne Donohue (COM’88), Associate Professor of Journalism at the College of Communication since 1996 (Donohue retiring this month). The general podcasts are overseen by audio production manager Shandra Back (COM’25). Sports and news Podcasts are produced by their own separate WTBU departments.

“When you’re in the car, eating, jogging, or whatever, it’s so easy to start a podcast instead of sitting down to read an article or turning on your TV,” says Back of why she thinks podcasts are always become more popular. “This is an activity that can be done anywhere, anytime, as long as you have access to headphones and a way to listen.”

The WTBU podcast studio on the third floor of COM was renovated 2017 after a Three alarm fire in March 2016, which destroyed the WTBU studios. And this despite the fact that the broadcaster receives most of its funding and is directly affiliated with it COMStudents from all universities and courses can take part.

Back says there’s a lot more that goes into producing a podcast than a great idea. The station received about 30 podcast pitches last spring, and she says the most successful show applications are those that come with a plan that includes a synopsis, episode ideas, a release schedule, and even graphics.

“Everyone from every major comes to COM and produces this content,” says Back, who also hosts her own travel-inspired podcast by the name sunshine on a dime. “All of our podcasts are so different, and I think that’s what makes our department so strong. We have a wide variety of subjects, subjects and people producing our podcasts.”
