Simone Biles faced embarrassing racist remarks after her first win

In her book Courage To Soar, Biles spoke about an incident when she had just won the 2013 World Championship. Biles claimed she woke up to a storm of tweets mentioning her. She ran to her mother’s office to find out what had happened.

Biles and her mother found out that Italian gymnast Carlotta Ferlito had made a racist remark to teammate Vanessa Ferrari. Ferlito said Ferrari,”Next time we should also paint our skin black, then we can win too.”

That comment was in reference to Gabby Douglas becoming the first black woman to win gold at the Olympics last year. Biles’ mother asked her to be proud of her accomplishments and not let those remarks spoil her moment. She said, “Don’t get caught up in it.”

Biles’ mother was level-headed in all situations

Simone Biles has spoken openly about her mother being level-headed in other cases as well. When Biles’ first trainer Aimee Boorman left the gym where Simone and Adria worked out, Biles was devastated. She started crying hysterically and called her mother.

Her mother asked her to calm down and not overreact to the situation. Biles insisted on emptying the lockers and leaving the gym, but her mother advised her against it. She advised Biles and her sister Adria to skip practice and attend church while she spoke to Boorman.
