Private jet travel is booming. You still can’t afford it.

New Jersey Institute of Technology.

— Maurie Cohen, Professorin für nachhaltige Studien am New Jersey Institute of Technology

Prominente nutzen Privatjets exzessiv.

„Das wirst du eher bekommen [to your destination].“

Private jet travel demand soaring despite recession fears, trade chief says

demand for Private jet charter flights in the Middle East and Africa will continue to grow beyond mega events like Expo 2020 World Cup in Qatardespite the global economic headwind, said the head of the industry association.

The Middle East’s private aviation sector has grown 25 to 27 percent year-on-year in terms of aircraft movements in 2022, Ali Ahmed Alnaqbi, executive chairman of Mebaa — the Middle East & North Africa Business Aviation Association — said in an online media outlet on Monday.

First and business class travelers who switched to private travel during the Covid-19 pandemic have continued to take charter flights rather than return to scheduled airlines, he said.

Mega-events like the Dubai Expo and the Doha World Cup, as well as an increasing number of applications for aircraft registration in the UAE, have contributed to the growth of the sector, he added.

“We’ve started to see a good level of activity in business aviation, whether it’s moving aircraft or aircraft size [or] Aircraft numbers… Definitely the market is growing in the Middle East and North Africa,” said Alnaqbi.

“The market in Dubai is truly growing and is the leader in business aviation in the Middle East and North Africa. Dubai Expo and now Fifa [World Cup] in Qatar had an impact on the business aviation market, but this impact is temporary and we look to continue healthy growth in the years to come. That is happening and we can see it in many areas.”

Mr Alnaqbi’s comments came ahead of the ninth Mebaa show, due to be held in Dubai next week, where business aviation executives will meet to discuss industry trends and showcase new aircraft. The fair will take place from December 6th to 8th in the second hub of the emirate DWC on the premises of the Dubai Airshow.

While the business aviation industry faces delays in new aircraft deliveries due to supply shortages and labor shortages, the used aircraft market is recovering, Alnaqbi said.

“The impact is there on new aircraft, but the used aircraft market is peaking at the same time, so the net effect is almost the same,” he said.

Bringing aircraft buyers and manufacturers together through platforms like the Mebaa show “will pave the way for future growth,” he predicted.

Sustainability will be at the forefront of discussions at Mebaa this year as the aviation industry takes steps towards its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 in the face of mounting pressure from climate change activists.

Global companies involved in the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), touted as a short-term solution to reducing airlines’ carbon footprints, are said to be meeting with local fuel manufacturers to determine “the best way from a business aviation perspective” for the Find use of SAF, Mr. Alnaqbi said.

Mebaa is also in talks with the UAE’s aviation regulator, the General Civil Aviation Authority, to discuss SAF production and usage with local fuel manufacturers, he added.

The global aviation industry is currently responsible for about 4 percent of global emissions, of which business aviation accounts for less than 1 percent, according to Mr. Alnaqbi.

“No matter how much work you do in business aviation to boost economies or build countries, you will still face criticism and we accept it,” he said. “We have to accept that and continue our business.”

The aviation industry is valuable when it comes to transporting people as safely and quickly as possible for business purposes, traveling home or meeting family and friends. “So we’re here for a good cause and a good reason,” he said.

“You can not [write off] the airline industry.”

About 8,500 visitors are expected at the Mebaa show, which has returned after being suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Tim Hawes, chief executive of Tarsus Group, which organizes the event.

About 95 countries are represented at the fair, from South America, Africa, India, Pakistan and Europe, he told reporters.

“Pre-registration for international visitors to the show is the highest we’ve had in the history of the show, so we’re seeing a lot of outside attention coming to the GCC,” said Mr. Hawes.

The fair saw a 10 percent increase in exhibitors, and 38 percent of them will come from countries new to the Mebaa fair, he said.

The Mebaa show hosts the BizAv Talks conference, which will include 20 sessions with 45 global experts discussing trends shaping the industry, from pressing sustainability concerns to the latest aircraft technologies.
