Darjeeling MP Raju Bista met with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss several issues including strengthening the railway network in North Bengal region.

MP Raju Bista wrote in his statement:

I met with the Honorable Railway Minister Sh. Ashwini Vaishwaw ji and alerted him to some pressing issues regarding the railways in Darjeeling and North Bengal region. Given our region’s strategic location as the gateway to Northeast India and the only part of the nation that shares four international borders, strengthening the railway network here is very important.

I informed the minister that Siliguri is one of the most important cities in the state as the financial capital of North Bengal and asked him there to introduce the “Vande Bharat” bullet train connecting Siliguri to Kolkata (up/down) Accelerate the expansion of New Jalpaiguri railway station to a world-class train station offering all passenger services and facilities.

I also informed him that due to the lack of proper medical facilities in North Bengal, thousands of people from our region travel to Hyderabad in Telangana, Chennai and Vellore in Tamil Nadu and Bengalauru in Karnataka for their medical treatment. So I asked for a southbound train departing from Sevoke or Siliguri to Hyderabad, Chennai, Katapadi (Vellore) and Bengaluru.

Given that there are thousands of people and students from our region living in Delhi and North Bengal lies in a critical geography connecting Northeast India with the rest of India and bordering Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh, it attracts a large number of people daily, and many of them have to travel to Delhi. I have therefore requested that a Superfast Express train connecting Siligui/NJP with Delhi be started at the earliest.

Considering that Siliguri was one of the first railway stations to be developed in North Bengal, I have requested the Honorable Minister to initiate the proper preservation, beautification and maintenance of the historic railway station of Siliguri city. I have also asked him to help permanently resolve the issue of settlement of locals in railroad areas so that there are no further encroachments while those already settled receive relief. Also, I asked Ashiwini ji to include Siliguri, Darjeeling, Sukna, Tindharey, kurseong and Ghoom stations in Azadi ka Amrit heritage celebrations.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) is one of the finest examples of human ingenuity and because of this virtue, the DHR was the first mountain railway to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is therefore our duty to preserve this legacy for posterity. I have therefore asked the Honorable Minister to modernize the Tindharey Railway Shop and convert it into a manufacturing shop for both steam and diesel narrow gauge locomotives. This will be the only such production unit in the world for narrow-gauge 2-foot gauge locomotives. I have also called for the establishment of a railway hospital in Tindharey which will not only provide medical assistance to the local people but will also benefit railway workers from across North Bengal and across the nation.

I have drawn the Honorable Minister’s attention to the acute staff shortage in the DHR and the numerous vacancies in the DHR, and asked him to fill all vacancies as soon as possible. Given that DHR is closely linked with tourism, I have asked the Minister to help upgrade Darjeeling, Ghoom and Kursong railway stations, which have all the facilities for locals and tourists, including overnight accommodation, health station and other related facilities . I have also requested the redevelopment of the iconic Batasia loop into a tourism and heritage hub.

I have informed the honorable minister why there is a need to set up a trauma center along the Sevoke-Rangpo railway line and that IRCON will provide proper compensation to the villagers who live near the Sevoke-Rangpo railway line.

I have also asked Ashwini ji to ensure that railroad signs in the region are written in local languages including Nepali which is a recognized language under Schedule VIII of our Constitution.

The venerable minister has assured me that he will do his best to comply with my requests and in due course everything will be fulfilled.

I remain committed to making the Darjeeling and North Bengal constituency one of the best rail-connected regions in the country.
