INDIAN RAILWAYS UPDATE: The Ministry of Railways has shared the current status of the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag project on its Twitter handle. The proposed 125.20km single track railway line between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag is part of the Char Dham project which connects the four major pilgrimage sites in the state of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

The construction of the railway line aims to reduce the travel time between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag to just 2 hours. It currently takes over 7 hours to travel between the two locations via the road route. The construction of the planned railway line should be completed by December 2024.

PROGRESS REPORT OF THE RISHIKESH – KARNAPRAYAG PROJECT:
- Land acquisition: 100%
- Clearing: 100%
- Tunnel works: 58.7 km completed
- Studs: 7 completed
- Major Bridges: 17 are underway with 2 nearing completion
- Minor bridges: 15 of 34 completed

In May, the Ministry of Railways tweeted: “Despite the geographic challenges of Uttarakhand’s difficult terrain, the project is gaining momentum. It will boost social, economic and cultural development in the region and target last mile connectivity.”

The construction of a 1,012 meter tunnel between Shivpuri and Byasi for the project was completed in April in a record 26 days. Uttarakhand Premier Pushkar Singh Dhami said the tunnel was built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) in the difficult geographical conditions of the route.

In April 2022, Minister of Railways Ashwini Viashnaw, in reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, said that the new Rishikesh – Karanprayag line project will be completed with an estimated budget of Rs 16,216 crore.

Of the total budget, Rs 6618 crore has been spent and an expenditure of Rs 4200 crore has been allocated to a budget for the 2021-22 financial year. The Rishikesh – Karanprayag railway line was approved in the 2010-2011 budget.

The Minister added that the process of acquiring land and clearing forest for the projects has been completed and the railway has also received Non Objection Certificates from Gram Sabhas resident along the line. The plans for the compensation as well as the rehabilitation of the affected families were provided according to the provisions in three annexes of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013, Vaishnaw told Rajya Sabha.
