Sikkim: Foreign tourists can apply for RAP and PAP online from October

According to the latest developments, foreign tourists visiting the Himalayan state of Sikkim will be able to apply for a restricted area permit (RAP) and a protected area permit (PAP) online from October this year. This was recently shared by an official in the know.

Also, the Prime Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, announced the same during his Independence Day speech, adding that online applications for RAP and PAP for foreign tourists will be available soon.


The official added that work is underway to develop the special website so that foreigners can easily apply for restricted area permits and protected area permits online through a special website during the upcoming tourist season in October.

Until now, in order to visit Sikkim, foreigners had to obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), formerly known as an InnerLine Permit, from the Sikkim Tourism Officers if they had a valid Indian Visa.

In response to the recent development, the Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS) thanked the Chief Minister as 60 percent of the state is totally dependent on tourism and hopes the move will help attract more and more tourists to the region.

And if reports are to go through, that was an age-old requirement from the Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS).

    The Foreigners Order 1958 states that non-Indian citizens need a protected area permit to visit certain areas in India. In order to obtain this permit, certain requirements must be met.

    A protected area permit is issued by the Ministry of the Interior. Also known as the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order 1958, it states that non-Indian citizens need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit certain areas in India, mostly alluding to Northeast India.

    To visit Sikkim, foreigners must obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), formerly known as an InnerLine Permit, from the Sikkim Tourism Officers based on a valid Indian Visa.
