Digital nomads: Juggling work and wanderlust | Travel
Circa 2013: Ranbir Kapoor’s dialogue by Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – Main udna chahta hoon, daudna chahta hoon, girna bhi chahta hoon, bus rukna nahin chahta – inspired a number of us to get out there and live every moment, free from the shackles of life. Exploring new cities, countries and cultures, all with a flexible job in hand, must have seemed surreal at the time. But not anymore, because digital nomad travel has taken over.
Simply put, digital nomads are those who have jobs they can do online and still travel the world. They frequently move from one place to another, immersing themselves in different cultures and experiences. A study by Lonely Planet and Fiverr highlighted the emergence of the “Anywhere Worker,” a breed of digital nomads more likely than freelancers to have a steady knowledge-based job that allows them to work from any location of their choosing. Of the 1,400 people surveyed, 54% identified as location independent, including 70% parents who took their children with them.
The birth of the trend
“Digital nomads have been around for a while, albeit in smaller numbers,” says Arun Ashok, Regional Manager (India & Middle East), Luxury Escapes, but agrees that Covid-19 has been “a definite accelerator”: “Rolling, who are not overly customer-facing have the luxury of being stationed anywhere with good WiFi. Once resorts and villas understood that, there was no more searching.” Ashok adds that cheaper destinations, particularly on islands, tend to offer backup power to protect against weather-related issues. “Meeting rooms for groups traveling together are a good addition,” he suggests.
Some hotels have seen a surge in these new types of travelers. “We are seeing more and more travelers whose headquarters are on their laptops and board meetings are being held via video call,” says Yeshwant Holkar, owner of Ahilya By The Sea, Goa. The trend has also given a boost to intermediaries who help move luggage with ease. “Essentially free from lugging and stress, a digital nomad wants freedom of movement by removing baggage from the travel equation,” said Harsha Vardhan, CEO and founder of CarterX, which provides technology-enabled travel solutions. “People who are moving to new cities and had no idea how to settle there. The reason for hosteling was no deposits, so we saw longer stays increasing,” says Pallavi Agarwal, Founder and CEO of goSTOPS.
Digital Nomad vs. Slomad vs. Workation
Digital nomads are people who work remotely and can move from one place to another while work is more of a getaway and falls under the digital nomad lifestyle. Slomads are another new trend gaining momentum, and refer to slow-traveling digital nomads who prefer to stay in one destination for long periods of time. They are also eco-conscious travelers.
The 10-day work of the gurugrammer couple Prannay Gulati and Mugdha Aneja in Goa turned into a two-month stay. “We work for the same MNC and they have switched to a work-from-home module. In Goa we rented an apartment to make it a budget friendly stay, but little did we know that we would end up staying almost 60 days!” says Gulati. But things are not that simple. He adds: “One could imagine sitting and working on a beach, but getting good WiFi in a cabin was a challenge. There were tourists everywhere in the cafes, so productivity dropped. But when it started to get off season it got better so we extended the stay.”
In addition to couples, parents also want their children to have unique experiences from an early age. “My children are seven and twelve years old. During the pandemic, my wife, children, elderly parents and I decided to move to Manali for two months. Schools have switched to online mode and my wife is a freelance writer so it was an easy decision for us. We rented a cottage and made sure it had good WiFi, backup power and other essentials to work online easily,” says Kushal Anand, 38, a Delhi-based entrepreneur.
Countries offering digital nomad visas
In order to boost tourism, which has been massively hit by Covid-19, 25 countries are now offering visas for digital nomads. Once received, a person can stay for up to 12 months, which can even be extended. Germany offers a German freelancer visa that allows you to work with small businesses and start-ups on a contract basis. Greece allows nationals of non-EU, EEA and Swiss countries to work for one year with a one-year extension. One can also apply for a residence permit for digital nomads. In Indonesia, travelers can apply for a Digital Nomad Visa and live tax-free for up to five years. There is also the Mauritius Digital Nomad Visa and the Bahamas Digital Nomad Visa, among others.
