Fourteen students from the Whitman School of Management, eager to experience the global economy, network with global partners and learn about the customs and culture of Africa, were part of the school’s 2022 year Cultural immersion in Kenya. The pilot immersion journey allowed students to connect classroom to classroom and apply their knowledge in a real global setting. The travel team was able to navigate how to become a global manager and a better global citizen.
Assistant professor during spring semester 2021 Elizabeth Wimer G’06 shared them with the class own travel experiences to South Sudan and Africa, where she worked as a counselor and teacher at a rural primary school. Wimer noted that the topic resulted in one of the most interactive and dynamic weeks of her Managing in a Global Setting course. Through the stories and photos she presented, students were able to make connections between what they were learning in class and course concepts in parts of the world that were less familiar to them.
“I figured if there was so much energy in a classroom discussion, if I could find a way to implement it in Africa, there would be even more energy, excitement and extension of learning,” says Wimer.
A few months later, she was able to do just that. The trip was approved in Fall 2021 and the travel team departed from Nairobi, Kenya in May 2022.
All students in Wimer’s class have been offered the opportunity to apply for the Kenya Cultural Immersion experience at the beginning of the Spring 2022 semester. In order to be selected as a member of the travel team, students had to apply and go through an interview.
Once selected, the travel team prepared for their trip with a one-credit course at the Whitman School. Wimer had three main goals for this course: cultural education, team bonding and logistical preparation.
“Professor Wimer prepared us with a course where we learned so much about what to expect when we arrive in Kenya. We talked about how to dress appropriately, what kind of food we would try and appropriate greetings,” says Jared Dowling ’24. “We also learned a lot about cultural norms within the class.”

Dowling wanted to go to Kenya because he was interested in making a global connection and immersing himself in another culture. “Going abroad is one thing, but going abroad with a purpose is quite another. I wanted to make a tangible difference with the partners and the people we met on this journey,” he says.
On the ground in Kenya, Dowling and the group were able to do just that. The week-long trip included a busy schedule with days starting at 6am and ending around 10pm. It is not a vacation, emphasized Wimer. Every day was a working day full of opportunities to help the partner organisations, the community and the refugees on the ground.
Most of the students’ time in Africa consisted of meetings with three global partners: Zaynah Khanbhai, founder of Merging Moundos and South South Women, a nonprofit focused on connecting the voices and experiences of the Global South; Stacia Hiramine, creative communications coordinator at Tirzah Bazaar, an international nonprofit that works with artisanal refugees to sell handcrafted goods; and the Child Discovery Center, a refuge and education center for orphaned and abandoned children in Nakuru, Kenya.
By connecting with these global partners, the students were able to see first-hand how businesses function differently in another country, particularly in a country with less economic opportunity, educational levels and limited infrastructure.
During a business panel led by Khanbhai, students had the opportunity to brainstorm and share ideas to bridge the gap between the Global North and the Global South in relation to their generation. Through their conversations, the students were able to learn more about the need for entrepreneurship from the women, who shared their stories of businesses that were started to help them support themselves and their families. In addition, the traveling team was able to meet local artisans and see the workshops that produce the goods for the Tirzah Bazaar. During this visit, the students were inspired by the stories of so many entrepreneurial dreams and aspirations of artisans. Overall, the travel team found that employees at these nonprofit organizations place so much emphasis on acquiring a range of skills and using their skills as a business opportunity.
It wasn’t all business, however. When not working, the group got to experience some of Kenya’s tourist attractions – go on a safari drive, watch and participate in cultural drumming and dancing, taste tea and visit a giraffe center.

The Whitman School offers a global opportunity like this, giving students a chance to see what it’s like to manage business operations across different cultures. Students can use their education and experience through these opportunities to go out and make a difference in the world while being a global manager.
“What we learn in our classes at Whitman is great and so helpful, but you can’t learn as much from a textbook as you can from experience,” says Isabella Simon, ’24. “I think taking this trip to Kenya, preparing to understand other ways of life and then gaining the perspective firsthand, has allowed the world to become our classroom.”

So who were the standout winners?
In the UK, Linthwaite House in the Lake District has set a record in three categories in the Best UK Hotels category, winning Best Hotel for Food, Best Hotel for Wine and Best Hotel for Golf for the second year running “ Excellent, proving that this luxurious Windermere retreat really is a favorite for our readers.
The famous Hotel DUKES London beat 23 others for the Best Boutique Hotel in the UK, while the Francis Hotel in Bath took first place in both Best City Hotel and Best Hotel for Business categories. The Culloden Estate and Spa in Belfast was voted the best spa/wellness hotel in the UK and firm favorite Ellenborough Park in Cheltenham topped the list for best family hotel after winning the romance category last year.
Best Tour Operator and Best Specialist Tour Operator were won by The Luxury Travel Book and Emirates is back at the top of the list of best airlines, having won in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and being knocked out to second place by British Airways last year. Royal Caribbean tops ‘Best Ocean Cruise Line’ list for the third year running and ‘Best UK City’, Bath has ousted London at the top spot for the second year running.
Heading overseas and in the largest category – Best Hotel in Europe (outside the UK) – the Amada Colossos Resort in Rhodes, Greece was awarded, the As Janelas Verdes Hotel in Portugal’s capital Lisbon took second place and the Burgenstock Hotel and Resort, Lake Lucerne in Switzerland in third place.
Thailand certainly boasts some top hotels, with Akyra Manor Chiang Mai and Aleenta Hua Hin-Pranburi Resort and Spa taking first and second place respectively in the Best Hotel in Asia category. It was the Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort and Spa in Mahe that took the top spot in the Best Hotel in Africa category, narrowly beating South Africa’s Earth Lodge in the Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve.
The NH Collection New York Madison Avenue was named Best Hotel in North America, while the Hitlon Barra in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was named Best Hotel in South America. Jade Mountain Resort in St. Lucia won the Caribbean category and Le Taha’a Island Resort and Spa in Tahiti won for Oceania.
The Amalfi Coast in Italy was the winner for Best Honeymoon Destination, while Verbier in Switzerland was named Best Ski Resort and Barcelona in Spain was voted Best City for the third consecutive year.
