Tokyo reported an unprecedented 40,406 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday, eclipsing last week’s previous single-day record as newly contagious omicron Sub-variants arise.
Japan‘s capital registered 7 deaths and 27 cases with severe symptoms, according to a local government statement. The occupancy rate of the hospital beds is 50.3, it said. The country added a total of 209,600 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of infections to over 11.9 million.
Despite the resurgence of new cases, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has ruled out reinstating nationwide movement restrictions in the near future. However, local governments are issuing guidance or restrictions to curb the spread.
