The pilot project was carried out by the Government in cooperation with the IIT-Delhi on a 4.5km stretch of road between Raja Garden and Britannia Chowk. As part of the project, bus lanes were properly demarcated and driving in the lane was also enforced. “This resulted in a 17% to 23% increase in bus commute speeds and a reduction in travel time after the new marking was installed throughout the journey. Instances of lane violations while driving also fell by 54%,” the Delhi government said in a statement.
Deputy Prime Minister Manish Sisodia and Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot held a review meeting with officials to discuss the results of the pilot phase.
Sisodia said that based on the experience gained from the pilot project, the government will ensure lanes and road markings are observed on all roads of Delhi.
The Delhi Ministry of Transport started a drive to ensure lane following, particularly for the bus lane, a few months ago. Vehicles that blocked lanes were hit and buses that went out of lane were also fined. The government statement said it was also making sure that all intrusions were removed from the bus lane.
